PS6 release date: what Sony has confirmed and what is still rumor
A dated record of what Sony and AMD have said officially, the leaks, reports and forecasts behind each launch-year guess and what it all means if you're buying a console now.

As of November 6, 2026, Sony hasn't announced a PS6 release date, a price or even the name PlayStation 6. What Sony has confirmed is that it is spending on a "next-generation platform" and, on November 5, 2026, that development is on schedule. Leaks and reports put the launch anywhere from fall 2027 to 2029. The PS4 arrived in North America on November 15, 2013, and the PS5 on November 12, 2020, so another seven-year gap would mean late 2027. But Sony's CEO said in May 2026 that the company was watching memory prices before settling either the timing or the price.
PS6 release date: what Sony has said so far
The key official statements from Sony and AMD, newest first:
- November 5, 2026. Sony CFO Lin Tao said the company intends "to make solid progress in preparing for the next-generation platform." Asked by a reporter whether development was on schedule, she said: "We are progressing as scheduled." An analyst then asked about profits if a new console arrived in Sony's next fiscal year, which begins in April 2027. She answered that "the memory prices will be one of the challenges the management will face" and that "from next fiscal year onward, there will be the investment for the new platform," without saying whether a console would launch in that year. Sony will explain how it invests "at appropriate timing in the future," she said.
- November 3, 2026. AMD, whose processor and graphics designs are inside the PS5, said its gaming revenue fell on "lower semi-custom sales as expected at this stage of the console cycle." Semi-custom chips are processors AMD designs for a single customer, such as a console maker. AMD didn't mention Sony or a new PlayStation.
- August 2026. In a newspaper interview, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company still hadn't fixed a launch date.
- July 31, 2026. Sony's first-quarter results listed "investments for the next-generation platform" among the rising costs of its games business. Sony also said it had "secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet our projected sales volume" for the fiscal year ending in March 2027.
- June 5, 2026. In written answers from an investor meeting, the leadership of Sony Interactive Entertainment, the PlayStation company, said that with the next platform, "rather than simply serving as an alternative to PCs," it aims to deliver "value that is unique to PlayStation," including "an expansion of usage styles, enabling a seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room."
- May 8, 2026. Sony's full-year results said its forecast included "an increase in investments for the next-generation platform." Totoki added: "We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices."
- February 3, 2026. AMD CEO Lisa Su said revenue from semi-custom chips would drop by "a significant double-digit percentage" in 2026, as consoles enter "the seventh year of what has been a very strong console cycle."
- October 9, 2025. In a video on PlayStation's official YouTube channel, Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, and Jack Huynh of AMD presented new work from Project Amethyst, the two companies' machine-learning partnership for graphics and gameplay, which Cerny had announced in December 2024. Of the technologies they showed, Cerny said he was "really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years' time."
PS6 confirmed vs rumored
Everything beyond those statements comes from leaks, unnamed sources and analysts. Who claimed what, and when:
| What | Status | Who said it | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name, release date, price and specs | Not announced | Sony | As of November 6, 2026 |
| A next-generation console is in development and on schedule | Confirmed | Sony results and its CFO | May 8 to November 5, 2026 |
| Graphics technology from Sony and AMD for a future console | Confirmed | Mark Cerny (Sony) and Jack Huynh (AMD) | October 9, 2025 |
| AMD beat Intel to the chip contract in 2022, partly over backward compatibility | Report | A news agency, citing sources familiar with the talks | September 2024 |
| Production from mid-2027, release in fall 2027 or early 2028 | Leak | A hardware leaker on YouTube | August 1, 2025 |
| A console codenamed Orion with 8 Zen 6 CPU cores, 40 to 48 RDNA 5 compute units and about three times the PS5's raster performance | Leak | The same leak | August 1, 2025 |
| A price below the PS5 Pro's | Leak | The same leak | August 1, 2025 |
| A handheld codenamed Canis, at about half the PS5's raster performance | Leak | The same leak | August 1, 2025 |
| Plays PS5 and PS4 games | Leak | The same leak | August 1, 2025 |
| Sony weighing a delay to 2028 or even 2029 over memory shortages | Report | A business news report, citing unnamed sources | February 2026 |
| Launch at the end of 2028, with no disc drive in the standard model | Forecast | An industry analyst | July 1, 2026 |
| Memory and storage alone cost more than $680 per console | Leak | A hardware leaker on a gaming forum | October 2026 |
Zen 6 and RDNA 5 are AMD processor-core and graphics designs four and three generations newer than the PS5's Zen 2 and RDNA 2, and raster performance means conventional rendering, without ray tracing. The August 2025 leak came before Sony started warning about memory costs, while the February 2026 report and the October 2026 leak both point to memory as the reason for a later or pricier console. Sony hasn't confirmed any of the leaks or reports.
PS6 specs: what Sony and AMD are building
Sony hasn't published specs. The closest official hint is Project Amethyst, whose three technologies Cerny and Huynh described in the October 2025 video:
- Neural Arrays let the GPU's compute units, the blocks that do the graphics math, share data and work "like a single, focused AI engine," in Huynh's words. Cerny said they would "process a large chunk of the screen in one go," which helps upscaling and denoising, the clean-up of grainy ray-traced images.
- Radiance Cores are "a new dedicated hardware block designed for unified light transport," Huynh said: hardware for ray tracing and path tracing, two ways of simulating how light bounces around a scene.
- Universal Compression compresses the data going into the GPU, not only textures, so it uses less memory bandwidth.
Cerny said the technologies "only exist in simulation right now." The video's own description says they "will lead to benefits across the gaming industry in the future."
One result of the partnership already ships: a new version of PSSR, short for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the PS5 Pro's AI upscaler, which Sony describes as analyzing game images pixel by pixel as it raises their resolution. On February 27, 2026, Cerny wrote that the algorithm and neural network of an upgraded PSSR "stem from our Project Amethyst partnership with AMD," and said more than 50 PS5 Pro games already used PSSR. A system update that began rolling out on March 16, 2026, let owners apply the upgrade to those games through a setting called Enhance PSSR Image Quality, and a September 2026 update switched that setting on by default.

How much will the PS6 cost?
Sony hasn't announced a price, and the consoles it sells now have only gone up. Official US list prices:
| Model | At launch | From August 21, 2025 | From April 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (with disc drive) | $499.99 (2020) | $549.99 | $649.99 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $399.99 (2020); $449.99 (2023 model) | $499.99 | $599.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $699.99 (2024) | $749.99 | $899.99 |
Sony blamed "a challenging economic environment" for the 2025 increase and "continued pressures in the global economic landscape" for the 2026 one.
Memory is the cost Sony keeps coming back to. On the May 8, 2026 call, Totoki said memory would still be in short supply and very expensive in fiscal 2027, the year that runs to March 2028, and that the company would "think about various simulations, including changing business models to come up with the best solution and strategy." He didn't name any, saying only that Sony would look at cutting hardware costs other than chips and "might think of new ways of selling the product." On November 5, 2026, Lin Tao said that after talks with suppliers, Sony had "aligned on the quantity of memory needed for our projected hardware unit sales" for that fiscal year. She didn't say whether the projection includes a new console.
Asked at the June 5, 2026 investor meeting about hardware pricing, including for the next platform, Sony Interactive Entertainment said it is "not realistic for us to absorb all component cost increases" and that, "as a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses."
Talk of a PS6 at $1,000 or more comes from commentators doing arithmetic on cost leaks like the October 2026 one in the table, not from a leaked price. That leak's figure for memory and storage alone is already higher than what Sony charges for a complete PS5 today.
Will the PS6 play PS5 games, and will it have a disc drive?
Sony hasn't said whether its next console will run PS5 or PS4 games. Its recent record is good: when it announced the PS5 Pro in September 2024, Sony said more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on it.
Discs, though, now have an official end date. On July 1, 2026, Sony said physical disc production "for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028." From then on, new games come out only in digital formats, through PlayStation Store and at retailers, while games released on disc before that date aren't affected. Sony gave the shift in buyer preference toward digital as its reason and didn't mention a new console.
Under that policy, if the next console arrives after January 2028, every new game for it will be digital, with or without a drive in the box. The PS5 Pro already launched without one: owners who want discs add Sony's $79.99 Disc Drive, which also fits the slimmer PS5 Digital Edition sold since November 2023.

Should you buy a PS5 or PS5 Pro now or wait for the PS6?
Buy now if you want to play now. Sony hasn't set a date, even the earliest leaked window is close to a year away, and GTA 6 arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 19, 2026 (see our GTA 6 release date guide).
Waiting for a discount is a gamble too. Sony said on November 5, 2026, that it had offset rising memory prices "through adjustments to promotions and pricing as well as additional cost reduction." New PS5 sales are "gradually declining as expected in this stage of the console life cycle," Lin Tao said, but the audience isn't going anywhere: Sony counts "about 100 million units of PS5 installed" and had shipped 97.9 million consoles by September 30, 2026.
Which PS5 to get:
- PS5 Digital Edition if you already buy your games as downloads.
- PS5 with disc drive if you own discs, buy used games or watch Blu-rays. It costs $50 more than the Digital Edition, less than adding Sony's separate drive later, and has more storage: 1TB instead of 825GB.
- PS5 Pro if you have a 4K TV and want the sharpest picture now, including the upgraded PSSR. On November 6, 2026, PlayStation Direct listed it as out of stock, while the other two models were in stock.
If you play in VR, Sony hasn't said whether PS VR2 will work with its next console. Today it connects to a PS5, or to a PC through Sony's adapter; our best VR headset guide compares it with the alternatives.

FAQ
When will Sony officially reveal the PS6?
Sony hasn't announced a reveal date. With the PS5, it first described the console's technology through an April 2019 interview with Mark Cerny, confirmed the name and a holiday 2020 launch window on October 8, 2019, showed the console itself on June 11, 2020, and announced prices on September 16, 2020, eight weeks before launch.
Will PS5 still get new games after the PS6 comes out?
Sony hasn't said how long it will support the PS5, though in November 2025 its CFO, Lin Tao, said the console was "only in the middle of the journey." When the PS5 was new, Sony kept releasing big games on PS4 too: God of War Ragnarök came out on PS5 and PS4 on November 9, 2022, two years into the PS5's life.
Will the next Xbox come out before the PS6?
Microsoft plans to ship alpha versions of its next console, Project Helix, to developers beginning in 2027, and AMD said in February 2026 that development of that console was progressing well to support a launch in 2027. Sony hasn't given a year for its own console. In June 2026, it said it does "not determine our launch timing based on competitors' movements," though it added that similar technology cycles could bring launches close together.
