A fast guide to the month: the 5 must-plays, the full calendar date by date, and the three pieces of news that actually matter (one of them scans your house).

The 5 must-plays (if you only have time for five)

Into the Radius 2 (PS VR2, delayed to October 8). The densest survival shooter in VR lands on PlayStation VR2 at a native 90fps with eye-tracked dynamic foveated rendering, headset haptics and adaptive triggers. Heads up: it's single-player only at launch; 2-player co-op arrives in a free update planned for Q4 2026.

Sol Protocol (Quest 3/3S, September 17, early access). Three friends, one ship, three seats: pilot, gunner, engineer. It's a co-op space roguelike from Singular Perception where roles rotate mid-run; the SteamVR version is targeting October. The Lightkeepers (Quest 3, September 10). The 1920s, Lovecraft and a lighthouse: by day you take boats out to loot islands, by night you and your crew hold the lighthouse against whatever crawls out of the water.

Knights of Fiona (Quest 3/3S and SteamVR, out since the 3rd). A co-op JRPG that's free to start: the hub city of Geogallia and the combat cost nothing, the campaign unlocks with a paid Story Pass. Early reviews are lukewarm, so try the free part before you decide. CONVRGENCE 1.0 (PC VR, September 17). The STALKER-like with horror leaves two years of early access with its final version: a procedural exclusion zone and nerves of steel required.

Dates are the ones the studios announced; a date or two may still slide.

The news that matters: your Quest 3 now runs at 207Hz (240 in dev mode)

Horizon OS 2.7, which started rolling out in early September, switched on 'Extended Refresh Rates' for Quest 3: up to 207Hz at full resolution through the standard APIs, and up to 240Hz if you enable developer mode and push ADB commands with display scaling on (it renders at a lower resolution and the hardware upscales). Quest 3 only: neither Quest 3S nor Quest 2 gets it.

The asterisk: games have to support it, and most run at 72–120Hz today. Meta also warns that scaling shows in small text and thin geometry, and that motion blur feels different above 144Hz. Bonus from the same update: Xbox gamepad emulation with the Touch Plus controllers for the Xbox and Steam Link apps.

Zombies that know your living room: Into the Dead: Crimson Heights

PikPok (the Into the Dead series) announced Into the Dead: Crimson Heights in June, a survival horror game they call 'Hyper Reality'. The idea: the game scans your room using Quest 3's scene understanding and turns your real furniture into in-game architecture and cover. Your couch becomes a barricade against the horde; your kitchen table, the only place left to duck behind.

It continues the Walton City zombie outbreak from Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days. Timing: sometime in 2027, on Meta (Hyper Reality) and Steam (regular VR). So you won't play it this month, but it's the clearest hint of where mixed reality is going: your physical space stops being a boundary and becomes part of the level.

Steam Frame is out ($1,059) and Meta Connect is next

Update, September 15: Valve launched the Steam Frame on September 14 at $1,059 (256GB) and $1,299 (1TB). Reservations are a lottery that closes Thursday, September 17 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific; purchase emails start September 18. It ships to the US, Canada, the UK, the EU and Australia. The «Great on Frame» catalog went from 8 titles in July to 89 by late August. Full breakdown: How much is the Steam Frame?

Meta Connect is September 23–24 in Menlo Park, with Zuckerberg's keynote on the 23rd and a free livestream. Meta has already teased new glasses; what happens with Quest is anyone's guess. If you have a Steam account, keep it ready; if you own a Quest, wait until the 23rd before buying anything.

Reality check: what we still don't know

We still don't know the Steam Frame's battery life in a real session or when the standalone Half-Life: Alyx lands. We don't know whether Meta will announce new VR hardware at Connect or whether it'll be a glasses-and-AI show. We don't know which games will support Quest 3's 207Hz, or when.

And on the release list: The Lightkeepers, Sol Protocol and Knights of Fiona are all co-op, but all three come from small studios; Sol Protocol's early access ships without the AI crew that was meant to fill empty seats, and Into the Radius 2 on PS VR2 is solo-only until the end-of-year patch. Buy with that expectation, not the trailer's.

What comes after couch co-op

Look at the pattern this month: Sol Protocol with three roles, The Lightkeepers holding a lighthouse as a crew, Knights of Fiona as a party, Into the Radius 2 adding co-op. Multiplayer is where VR is heading. The next step is doing it with your whole body: no cable, walking real meters, with up to 8 friends in the same room.
