Meta Reality Labs lost $4.13 billion in Q3 2026: what the VR losses mean for Quest
Why the hole got smaller, what Reality Labs actually sells, and why the money keeps flowing toward glasses instead of a new Quest.

Meta's Reality Labs, the division that makes the Quest headsets and the company's smart glasses, lost $4.13 billion from July to September 2026. That's 7% less than the $4.43 billion it lost in the same quarter of 2025, according to Meta's third-quarter results.
Revenue fell 6%, to $443 million from $470 million. Through the first nine months of 2026 the division lost $12.78 billion, down 3% from $13.17 billion, and Meta expects the full-year loss to land between $18 billion and $19 billion, below the 2025 total. That leaves room for a fourth-quarter loss of about $5.2 billion to $6.2 billion.
Reality Labs covers Meta's virtual and augmented reality hardware, software and content: the Quest 3 and Quest 3S, AI glasses such as Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Ray-Ban Display, and the apps and games sold for all of them. Augmented reality is the version of the technology that lays digital images over the real world instead of replacing it.
Meta's quarterly filing credits lower employee compensation, partly offset by higher spending on third-party AI services. Company-wide headcount fell 15% from a year earlier, to 66,775 people.
The rest of Meta covers the bill with room to spare. Total revenue rose 26% to $64.60 billion, and Family of Apps, the segment that holds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, earned $17.12 billion from operations in the quarter. Meta forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $73 billion to $76 billion.
Quest buyers already pay for the cost squeeze. On April 19, 2026, Meta raised the US price of the Quest 3 from $499.99 to $599.99 and the Quest 3S to $349.99 for 128GB, citing a surge in memory chip prices.
The next device on Meta's VR roadmap isn't a Quest 4. At Connect on September 23, 2026, Meta unveiled Meta VR Glasses, a pair of roughly 100 grams tethered to a pocket unit that holds the processor and battery, due in spring 2027 at $1,299.99. A division losing more than $4 billion a quarter is betting its next launch on glasses, and our guide to the best VR headset to buy now covers what that leaves on store shelves this holiday season.
