Does GTA 6 have VR? Short answer: no (and the only headset in the game is a joke)

Two months out from November 19, the question keeps coming back. We looked at what Rockstar has shown, GTA's history with VR and whether there's any chance of playing it in a headset.

GTA 6 and VR: no VR mode has been announced

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar reconfirmed the date in August alongside its extended gameplay reveal, and none of its trailers or official announcements mention a virtual reality mode.

There's no announced PS VR2 support either. If you were thinking about buying a headset to cruise Leonida in first person, there's nothing to buy it for yet.

The only headset in GTA 6 is a joke

The game's only VR shows up as a prop: in the extended gameplay reveal a character is wearing a headset, and people who went through the footage frame by frame agree the scene pokes fun at people who lock themselves indoors with a headset on. Nobody is playing GTA inside it.

Classic Rockstar: the series mocks every tech trend, and VR was never going to be spared.

Rockstar has tried VR before, with mixed results

It's not that Rockstar never tried. In December 2017 it published L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files, a VR adaptation of L.A. Noire cases that received mixed reviews. And at Connect 2021, Meta proudly announced GTA: San Andreas for Quest 2.

That VR San Andreas never showed gameplay. In August 2024 Meta confirmed the project was “on hold indefinitely while we both focus on other projects.” There's been no news since.

What about a VR mod? First there has to be a PC version

GTA V can be played in VR, but only thanks to community-made PC mods that arrived years after launch. The problem is that GTA 6 has no announced PC version: GTA V took roughly 19 months to move from consoles to PC, from September 2013 to April 2015.

And even when it arrives, there's no guarantee a mod survives: CD Projekt had the Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod by Luke Ross, one of the best-known modders in the scene, taken down. For GTA 6, think years, not months.

Why GTA in VR is harder than it sounds

There are technical reasons nobody has done it officially. Driving fast in first person while your body sits still is one of the biggest triggers of VR motion sickness, because your eyes see motion your inner ear doesn't feel. GTA is also built around a third-person camera chasing the car.

Then there's running a huge city at the frame rate a headset needs, on consoles already working hard on the regular version. It's not impossible, but it's a different game, not a switch you flip.

If what you want is first-person action with friends

While GTA 6 plays out on the TV, VR action lives elsewhere: co-op shooters, team heists and games where your body is the controller. We rounded them up in the best multiplayer VR games.

And if you want to actually move, cable-free, with your crew, at VR.one we're building a free-roam arena in Ycuá Satí, Asunción. We're not open yet; join the waitlist to hear it first.
